Think about the past couple of years for a moment. Do you remember when you or someone you know had a job loss, illness, or injury? If not you are pretty lucky. These events happen to everyone eventually. Yet, there are so many cases where we don’t prepare for such events financially. We believe it only happens to others so we never save.

But you can take the steps to save so you’re prepared. When you open a savings account you get three benefits that are going to help you save. Those benefits include easier depositing, more comfort having money in the account, and keeping that money in the bank. Let’s look at them a little more.

Deposit Easier

The easier it is to deposit the more likely our savings will grow. Money in the hand is money spent. Having an account open and ready for deposit makes it a lot easier to deposit on a whim. This way you can just as easily save it as spend it. And, if I were you, set up a direct deposit with your employer so you don’t even see it go into the account.

Get More Comfortable with Using a Savings Account

Putting money in a new account can at first seem uncomfortable. I still remember when I first started saving. I checked my balance just because I needed to know it still was there. Sounds a little paranoid but over time it made me comfortable having money in the account and I started saving more.

Hidden Money Stays Hidden

We are less tempted to spend the money because it’s “hidden” in the account. Usually it’s harder to get cash out of a savings account. At the very least we need to transfer money into a checking account before we can withdraw from an ATM. Otherwise it takes a couple days to withdraw funds. Now this may not seem like a benefit but this delay gives us a cooling off period. It stops us from spending on a whim and keeps the money in the bank.

Conclusion

Without any savings you truly are living on the edge. Accidents, job loss, and illness are facts of life. Get prepared for these events through saving no matter how small. When you open a savings account you get the benefits I just discussed. Easier deposits so your account will grow, you’re more comfortable having money in the account, and you keep the money in the bank and out of your hand. So give it a try and just open a savings account. It won’t bite.

Quick Tip: Look at online savings accounts. You can open one with as little as $1.

I believe the best savings account for kids is an online account linked back to a local savings account. I think it is important very early on to educate children about the differences between rates of return and the usefulness of both types of banks (local and online). Both types of saving and loan banks serve a purpose for families and understanding how the two are the same and different will start your child down a good life long learning path.

There is no doubt that most people find finance and banking utterly boring. It simply is what it is. On the other hand there are a few fundamental concepts to teach children at an early age that will help them intuitively understand more important financial aspects in later years.

First among them is to differentiate between banking offers. Figuring out the best savings account for kids at your children’s ages is a great opportunity to explore the different offerings in the saving marketplace and including the kids in the discussion.

Topics to discuss might include:

What is an interest rate?

In what country is this banks’ headquarters?

What does FDIC mean?

Which bank has the highest rate?

All of these factors should be a part of parents’ discussion with children about which is the best savings account for kids. It is also perfectly alright to have the conversation more than once, as needs change and the child grows.Parents who take the time to learn basic business and banking information for themselves become well prepared to teach and demonstrate finance to their children. Given that public education is virtually devoid of teaching of basic home finances any pointers parents give their children are vitally important, because they won’t get that information elsewhere.

While ultimately the lessons of basic money management are dull they are important. Here are some tips to help make the discussion about a savings account for kids more fun and meaningful to them.

If you’re not sure about banking online, here’s a few thoughts on how to open a bank account online wisely.
